Identity is a complex thing. From birth to death our identities develop and change. However, something that never changes with our identities is the way they’re written on papers and cards proving our existence.
I am a Swedish-speaking Finn, which means my mother tongue is Swedish. Finns are divided into three different groups Samis, Swedish-speaking Finns and Finns who speak Finnish as a mother tongue. This is also a reason why I don’t like referring to myself as a Finn since it’s so close to the Swedish word finne which refers to the last category. I much rather call myself a Finnish person or just say I am from Finland even though I know that a Finn is simply a person from Finland. Now I know I know it probably sounds like Finland is a very split country with people who doesn’t want anything to do with each other, but we are all from Finland and that is my nationality, that is what shapes me and my identity. Even though Belgium is a small country there is a lot of diversity. Belgium is divided into 3 main districts: Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels which is also our capital. In recent years, there has been a huge commotion about immigrants whether they are or are not welcome in our country. Although Wallonia and certainly Brussels has been very welcoming towards these people, Flanders has another opinion. They are mainly against these immigrants, because the indigenous people don’t feel connected to them and consider that they don’t share the same identity as these people. This is because Flanders is very conservative compared to the progressive Wallonia.

We as proud Belgians have a diverse culture which we have stolen from our occupiers throughout the years. We have been conquered by a plethora of nations like Spain, France, Great Britain, Germany and many more. Our culture is divided, there is no two ways about it, we have French people in the south, Dutch people in the north and Germans in the east. There has been quite some uproar about the differences between the north and the south, we in the north are better in every single way imaginable and the people in the south (Walloons) are considered lazy layabouts. We are a country where PC culture is quite dominant, this keeps racism to a minimum, but you get called a racist rather quick.
